GALLIPOLIS, Ohio - Beau Johnson, Jaidyn Patrick, Sofia Salisbury, Sydney Hairston, Trenton Morrissey, Jenna Lewis, and Apphia Welker were named the 2023 recipients of the Ohio Valley Bank 4-H Scholarship. To date, the bank has helped 254 4-H members pay for college through the program.
Beau Johnson, of Gallipolis, Ohio, was named the Gallia County Scholar. He is the son of Stoney and Amy Johnson. He is a member of the Country to the Core 4-H Club. He will graduate from Gallia Academy High School this spring and plans to study animal sciences/biosciences at The Ohio State University.
Jaidyn Patrick, of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., was named the Mason County Scholar. She is the daughter of Jamie and Melissa Patrick. She is a member of the Roadrunners 4-H Club. She will graduate from Point Pleasant High School this spring and plans to attend Marshall University to study elementary education.
Sofia Salisbury, of Beaver, Ohio, was named the Pike County Scholar. She is the daughter of Gerry and Junie Salisbury. She is a member of the Above the Rest 4-H Club. She will graduate from Eastern Pike High School this spring and will attend Morehead State University to study early childhood education this fall.
Sydney Hairston, of Ironton, Ohio, was named the Lawrence County Scholar. She is the daughter of Jeff and Andrea Hairston. She is a member of the Lawrence County 4-H Shooting Sports, Silver Spurts & Barnbusters 4-H Club. She will graduate from Ironton High School this spring. She plans to attend Shawnee State University this fall, where she will study psychology.
Trenton Morrissey, of Long Bottom, Ohio, was named the Meigs County Scholar. He is the son of Thomas and Anita Morrissey. He is a member of the Meigs Creek 4-H Club. He will graduate from Nelsonville York High School this spring. He plans to study law at Ohio University.
Jenna Lewis, of Jackson, Ohio, was named the Jackson County Scholar. She is the daughter of Anna and Will Lewis. She is a member of the Highlanders 4-H Club. She will graduate from Jackson High School this spring. She plans to attend either Ohio University or Muskingum University, where she will study psychology.
Apphia Welker, of Milton, W.Va., was named the Cabell County Scholar. She is the daughter of Keturah and Nick Amandus. She is a member of the Ridge Runners 4-H Club. She plans to attend Mountwest Community and Technical College.
Created in 1986, for over 30 years the Ohio Valley Bank 4-H Scholarship Program has recognized outstanding high school seniors for their accomplishments in 4-H. Recipients receive $3,000 over 4 years which is typically presented to them during the county fair.
Winners are determined by 4-H advisors and volunteers. 4-H involvement accounts for 50 percent of the decision. The other half considers the individual’s experiences in other groups and activities, academic accomplishments and potential for success.
